Mallorca – vacation impressions
In August, we visited Majorca, an island that we dreamed about visiting for a long time. In this article we want to share with you our impressions of a weekly stay at this Spanish resort.
I’ll start with the most urgent. Shops in Mallorca, including food, are closed at the most unexpected time. We stopped in the rave town of El Arenal, and no matter how hard we tried to get into the major stores of the Mercadona chain, all our attempts were in vain. On Sundays, the shops were closed, and on Wednesday, August 15, when we finally found ourselves at the door of Mercadona, it turned out that the public holiday fell on this day – the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, and we were again left with nothing. Rescued the convenience stores Spar, where you could buy the most necessary – sausage, cheese, bottled water, ice cream. However, in these stores I advise you to closely monitor the shelf life – one of the sausages, which I in a hurry bought home, was overdue.
All shops, souvenir shops, hotels, restaurants have air conditioning. Thanks to the air conditioner, we could sleep peacefully without any noise, just by closing the balcony door. However, due to the air conditioner at the airport of Majorca, which was turned out by about +15, I ached after the trip.
Before this trip to Spain, we have been to Tenerife several times, but have not been to mainland Spain since 2012. We remember the residents of Tenerife as extremely polite and unhurried, ready to help the tourist. The opposite situation is going on in Mallorca – the local Spaniards have no idea about culture: they are jostling, climbing without waiting, pushing everyone to be the first to get on the bus. Cultural Europeans are unusual
A transport system is developed on the island of Mallorca – imagine, there are metro, trains, city and intercity buses. True, the buses do not go on schedule, but as the card will fall. It may be lucky, and your bus will come in a few minutes, or it may not come at all or be late for 40 minutes – not weak, right? I remember how we were stuck at a bus stop on the highway near the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca. We left with purchases from the Fan shopping center, it was about 10 o’clock in the evening, and we expected that some bus would come to us. However, after standing at the bus stop for about half an hour with a couple of tourists from Spain, we lost all hope and returned to the mall in search of a taxi. But it was not there! Taxi cars were simply nowhere to be found. We tried to call a taxi company and even to our hotel in El Arenal, but all was in vain. After a couple of tens of minutes of our throwing to a halt, a taxi finally arrived, and everything ended well. I remember that then we were very surprised, remembering, again, Tenerife, where transport comes – albeit not on a schedule, but it comes. Here I wanted to quit and rent a car.
Majorca has very picturesque coves, and there are both sandy and rocky beaches. On sandy beaches, as a rule, entry into the water is very long – you will have to go to the depths with cool water. On stony oneand swim, but only in special slippers – there are many sea urchins here. It is said that the most interesting beaches and coves are located in the eastern part of the island, which is also famous for its caves.
There are many tourists here. Just imagine, on the island of 50 to 50 km per year, 15 million people come, and the passenger traffic of the airport of Majorca is 27 million! And, as it seemed to us, the lion’s share of tourists comes just to our resort – El Arenal. For a more relaxed and measured rest tourists go to the resorts of Magalluf in the west of the island or Alcudia in the north of the island.
There are a lot of thieves, beggars and illegal street vendors in Mallorca. This was an unpleasant surprise for us, because in a week we and our friends managed to steal things on trifles on the island with us and our friends. This has never happened to any of us before, and at the same time we have traveled around most of the countries of Europe – from Romania to Belgium. And they stole our things on the beach in plain sight. The thieves here are very sophisticated, and they drag things from under their noses, so do not lose vigilance and do not go swimming in the whole company. I don’t even talk about carrying bags and backpacks in front of you. The police, by the way, will not even deal with theft if the amount of damage does not exceed 300 euros.
