Easter Island

>At the airport, we warmly said goodbye to Juan and flew to Lima. Paradox, but the flight instead of the planned two hours took a little more than an hour. In Lima, we again “reunited” with Ukrainian friends and the plane of the Chilean airline, LAN, flew to Fr. Easter. Upon registration, two more Russians were identified – a married couple from Surgut. As a result, “Russian invasion” was noted on Pashi Island. Usually it is visited by 1-2 people from Russia per month.
The plane was filled to one third. Many passengers, having thrown back the handles of the central seats, happily stretched out on three chairs and slept peacefully. In general, it should be noted that flights by LAN turned out to be the most comfortable …
On the island we were greeted by a shark and a travel agency booth, offering entrance tickets to the reserve for $ 50 (at the borders of the reserve itself, it costs $ 63).

Tour to Peru. Easter Island

In the hotel where we were brought (about seven in the morning) there were no rooms available and we had to wait until 10-00. Surgut residents immediately went on excursions planned for them that day, and we, after a short walk along the coast, finally settled in and went to bed.

Easter Island is a “village” among the Pacific Ocean. The main part of the buildings is single-storey, roosters are singing in the morning, cattle grazing on the hills. The population is just over five thousand people. In the tourist season, it increases due to tourists up to twenty thousand. Two thirds of the local people are representatives of the indigenous population. In 1960, they achieved independence from Scotland and crossed the Chilean flag, while maintaining strong autonomy. Everything you need to live up from Chile. Locals are lazy – they live at the expense of tourism and renting land for hotels. Agriculture that flourished when the Scots is in a depressed state. Therefore, prices on the island are high. The problem of inexpensive food – problem number 1.
We found a restaurant on the street connecting the church and the diving center (the second house from the sea, two-story with a wooden balcony) where for $ 38 offered six options for “complex meals”: fresh juice, soup or salad, hot (fish or meat) and dessert. Huge and tasty portions, and the price is in general comparable to prices in Moscow restaurants.

Tour to Peru. Easter Island

If you want to eat more modestly, you need to go to the main street (if you go from the diving center up to the church turn right at the first intersection). There are many cafes, restaurants, there are supermarkets (a loud name, but still), the market is open in the morning.

Choosing a place for dinner, do not strive to go to a small restaurant or fast food, prices here will usually be very high. We found a restaurant on the right side of the street with an internal hall and a wooden terrace (total number of tables about 25), where dinner for two cost 27,000 peco (about $ 55). The official rate of $ 1 = 500 peco, we managed to change for 490 peco – a gas station on the street leading from the airport to the sea – everywhere they take dollars, but they consider the rate based on 460 peco.

As for souvenirs, it is better to buy them here on the main street, because directly at the idols you can offer them at prices 5 times more expensive.

If the guides will offer to visit any restaurant, it is better to refuse, most likely, the restaurant belongs to their relatives and the prices in it will be exorbitant.

We stayed on the island for three and a half days – this is too much. Aircraft fly here from three points: Santiago, Lima and Tahiti. At the same time flights to Lima and Santiago take place every other day (the plane flies according to the following scheme: Lima – Easter Island – Santiago – Easter Island – Lima) Excursions were scheduled as follows – arrival day (rest), full day – half day (free time ) – half day (flight to Lima)
In reality, the visit can be planned as follows:
1 day – arrival (5:55), accommodation at the hotel, excursions all day according to the plan.
2 day – the remaining tours – to the mouth of the volcano and the remaining giants of the program (we made them without a lunch break and were freed around 13-00)
Due to the fact that the transfer to the airport is scheduled for 15-30, the remaining time can be spent on visiting a restaurant, or on inspection, not included in the maoi program on the bank to the right of the diving center (this will take about an hour). A couple from Surgut acted almost according to this scheme. But they flew away not on the second day, but in the morning of the third, since they had scheduled visits to Chile.

And now about excursions. As stated in the program, the guide was English-speaking. In this part of the group spoke in Spanish, so the Hana (guide) was limited to only general information, repeating them in two languages. Being a native inhabitant of the island, she, like all Rapanuans, prefers to adhere to the official version, without digging into details. Even to questions about the ancestral homeland and the legendary land of Mu (they appear in ancient legends) she could not give a clear answer.

In general, poor language skills are not a problem for organizing a visit to the island. All the necessary material can be easily found on the net.
