City of Morocco. Marrakech is becoming a popular tourist destination.

Marrakesh is not only one of the largest cities in the Kingdom of Morocco, but also a peculiar symbol of this state. The fact is that the toponym “Morocco” is the wrong Spanish pronunciation of the name of this city. Thus, by the Spanish name of the city, the African state got its name, which is washed in the north by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and in the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

And the very name of the city is still contested. It is probably derived from the Berber word “mur” and “akush”, which means “the land of God.” But according to historian Susan Sirright, the name of the city was mentioned in the manuscript of the 11th century, which is stored in the library of the city of Fes, and the meaning of the name of the city in this manuscript is different – “the land of the sons of Kush”.

Since the historical capital of the kingdom was often the city of Marrakesh, from medieval times to the beginning of the 20th century, the entire country of Morocco in English and other European literature was known as the “Kingdom of Marrakesh”. Now the city is the third largest in Morocco after Casablanca and the capital – Rabat. Marrakesh has many nicknames, such as “Red City”, “City of Ocher”, “Daughter of the Desert”, “Incomparable”. The poets compare it with “a drum that beats its complex identity into the complex soul of Morocco with its African identity”.

The city of Marrakesh lies at the foot of the Atlas Mountains – a large mountain system that stretches from the Atlantic coast of Morocco through Algeria to the coast of Tunisia. The highest mountain Toubkal (4167 m) is located in Morocco.

Marrakesh, with its main, busiest Djemaa Square – El Fna, which translates as “the square of the dead”, its crowded markets and narrow streets, the surrounding snowy mountains, palaces, oriental exotic and tasty food – all this contributed to the fact that the city became popular tourist facility. Marrakesh occupies the first lines, according to many travel magazines, by visiting rating.

The capital of Morocco attracts local and foreign tourists with its location, unique atmosphere and architecture. Marrakech has Morocco’s largest traditional Berber souk market. Everything is bought and sold here, from modern equipment and household appliances to traditional handicrafts and Berber carpets. This is the most favorite place among tourists visiting Morocco.
The capital also gained popularity after the organization of the International Film Festival, which takes place here in December. The Marrakesh International Film Festival is chaired by the Prince of Morocco, Moulay Rashid.
